Words of Wisdom From Steve Jobs

Curated from:

1) “It’s really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.” (Tweet this quote!)

2) “Simple can be harder than complex. You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.” (Tweet this quote!)

3) “You can’t con people in this business. The products speak for themselves.” (Tweet this quote!)

4) “When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it. You’ll know it’s there, so you’re going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back. For you to sleep well at night, the aesthetic, the quality, has to be carried all the way through.” (Tweet this quote!)

5) “Quality is more important than quantity. One home run is better than two doubles.” (Tweet this quote!)

6) “The computer is the most remarkable tool we’ve ever come up with. It’s the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds.” (Tweet this quote!)

7) “I would trade all of my technology for an afternoon with Socrates.” (Tweet this quote!)

8) “I’m as proud of many of the things we haven’t done as the things we have done. Innovation is saying no to a thousand things.” (Tweet this quote!)

9) “It’s more fun to be a pirate than to join the navy.” (Tweet this quote!)

10) “Getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.” (Tweet this quote!)

11) “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” (Tweet this quote!)

12) “Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful … that’s what matters to me.” (Tweet this quote!)

13) “My model for business is The Beatles. They balanced each other and the total was greater than the sum of the parts. That’s how I see business: great things in business are never done by one person, they’re done by a team of people.” (Tweet this quote!)

14) “I don’t really care about being right, I just care about success. I don’t mind being wrong, and I’ll admit that I’m wrong a lot. It doesn’t really matter to me too much. What matters to me is that we do the right thing.” (Tweet this quote!)

15) “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help make the big choices in life. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.” (Tweet this quote!)

16) “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” (Tweet this quote!)

Keywords In Your Resume Are Important

Along with action verbs and accomplishment based task bullet-ed list, each résumé you send out must match the keywords in the company’s advertisement and/or their values from their website. Do your research folks if you want to get the call for the interview! Then enjoy the cute little cartoon. 🙂

What are some good online tools to evaluate resumes?

Standard

For job seekers who must continually use their current resumes as a template for the next job ad they want to apply for here are some good text comparison tools, not all free, but worth it if you need to compare your resume keywords with those in a job ad quickly and accurately.

Hope these help you folks get the resumes out.  But remember if they find you online because you built your “career brand” up then you don’t have to work so hard at this job search thing.  When recruiters search for the skills your name will pop up in their Google searches and they will call YOU.

So with all the competition out there in the job market, you must take the reigns and take charge of your online presence NOW!  If you don’t start posting positive things about yourself and your accomplishments the web has a way of only showing our “digital dirt” to people who search for our names and believe me if you’ve had your fingers on a keyboard the last 15 years then you have digital dirt too.  Anything you might have said in an online forum back in the AOL days is still alive and breathing on the WWW for a potential employer to find.  So search yourself, create new positive stories and blog about your industry knowledge, etc.

All these steps together will make a huge difference in your job search results and that phone might start ringing.

Answer by Mill Montejo:

There is a great new tool out which comes from DiffNow that is powered by prestoSoft the makers of ExamDiff Pro to Compare files, directories, documents, archives, and binary files with this visual diff utility

I have used it to do keyword comparisons from a client’s resume to the job ad they spotted and wish to apply to.  It works really well in isolating the differences in the text from your resume, to the job ad, which is important to match as much as possible while not lying about your experience, to make your resume keyword optimized.  Unfortunately in the competitive job market we have now everyone MUST target each resume to each job ad or risk it being lost in the black hole of the Applicant Tracking Systems in use by recruiters, and hiring managers to sort through the hundreds of resumes they receive for one opening.  It’s like optimizing a website for SEO.  It’s an algorythm and keyword game folks!

“DiffNow lets you compare text files, documents, binary files, and archives up to 1024KB in size. You can either upload the files you wish to compare or enter their URLs. Results are returned as an interactive HTML report.

DiffNow is powered by ExamDiff Pro and uses all of the comparison plug-ins in the ExamDiff Pro plug-in library.

All uploaded files are deleted immediately after comparison.”

Best of luck in your job search!

Yes You Can Make a Video Resume Too

How the hell do I get hired?!?!

Check out the very informative SlideShare from Prakash Bala below:

I believe the “meat and potatoes” of the slideshow are on slide 7 and 8.  Prakash lists very important key points you must remember to do before an interview.  I cannot stress this enough, you must absolutely, positively practice for any interview if you expect to have a chance to get the job.  There is way too much competition out there today.

See some stats from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

Among the major worker groups, unemployment rates declined in April for adult men (5.9 percent), adult women (5.7 percent), teenagers (19.1 percent), whites (5.3 percent), blacks (11.6 percent), and Hispanics (7.3 percent). The jobless rate for Asians was 5.7 percent (not seasonally adjusted), little changed over the year. (See tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.)

The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) declined by 287,000 in April to 3.5 million; these individuals accounted for 35.3 percent of the unemployed. Over the past 12 months, the number of long-term unemployed has decreased by 908,000. (See table A-12.)

So you see, it stands to reason that anyone that really wants to get that job they have their eye on, will practice, cross their fingers and hope for the best.  Because the employers short list likely totals at least 30 others maybe just as qualified as you.

So here are some of the steps that Prakash outlined in his slideshare:

  • Have a written script to read from
  • Practice in front of a mirror until you think it is perfect
  • Calculate how long it takes you to read your script
  • Ensure that you highlight all your top accomplishments in your script
  • Make it about 1 to 2 minutes long, succinct and to the point with 3 to 4 sections
  • Start with stating your contact info: name, title, location
  • Discuss your academic qualifications
  • Speak to any projects, its goals, objectives, and outcomes and your role in it
  • List your strengths, accomplishments, and what you will bring to the table
  • Conclude with your email address, phone number, and any professional website address

If you want to give making your own video resume a shot here is a great new tool from Re.vu that helps you do that. Please share our post with friends so they too can learn how to create a video resume with this free and very intuitive tool that anyone can use.  I hope these educational resources I have curated here have been useful.  If so please share our Blog with others that might benefit as well.  If you still need personalized help with your current job search or career documents then drop us a line.

Click here to find millions of jobs from thousands of company web sites, job boards and newspapers. one search. all jobs. Indeed.

While I wouldn’t necessarily post a public resume on Indeed even if there is a private posting option. It is still a great aggregating website that in essence pulls in from all other job advertisements on the web. You can go to industry career website for a more in depth look, but for a significant online curation of most of the job ads out there, I would suggest using Indeed and setting up weekly digest email alerts. This is not meant to have you sending out 300 resumes. But to identify where there might be a few advertised openings. If it’s a company you want to work for then contact us at www.HelpWriteResume.com for further tips on how to reach the decision makers at that specific company.
