Battle For The Net – Look What We Did

Standard

The Talent Mill participated in this protest and we fully support it. We will be watching how it plays out. Join us and spread the word or sign petitions.

If you woke up tomorrow, and your internet looked like this, what would you do? Imagine all your favorite websites taking forever to load, while you get annoying notifications from your ISP suggesting you switch to one of their approved “Fast Lane” sites.Think about what we would lose: all the weird, alternative, interesting, and enlightening stuff that makes the Internet so much cooler than mainstream Cable TV. What if the only news sites you could reliably connect to were the ones that had deals with companies like Comcast and Verizon? On September 10th, just a few days before the FCC’s comment deadline, public interest organizations are issuing an open, international call for websites and internet users to unite for an “Internet Slowdown” to show the world what the web would be like if Team Cable gets their way and trashes net neutrality. Net neutrality is hard to explain, so our hope is that this action will help SHOW the world what’s really at stake if we lose the open Internet. If you’ve got a website, blog or tumblr, get the code to join the #InternetSlowdown here: https://battleforthenet.com/sept10thEveryone else, here’s a quick list of things you can do to help spread the word about the slowdown: http://tumblr.fightforthefuture.org/post/96020972118/be-a-part-of-the-great-internet-slowdown Get creative! Don’t let us tell you what to do. See you on the net September 10th!

Be Certain You Are Comfortable With The Entire Cost of FREE APPS – Facebook Messenger Especially

Standard

Credit: Some entries from Sam Fiorella’s great 8/2/14 Huff Post Tech Article to which I’ve added some imagery to help stress to the public the urgency of this situation. At the very least I want everyone to know what they are doing. Don’t come crying to me when an identity thief, hacker, old boyfriend or the likes have enough info about you to ruin your life as you know it. By then it’s too late to undo the online collateral damage. Help Sam and I spread the word by sharing either of our articles,~Dr Mill Computer Wiz

“How much access to your (and your friends’) personal data are you prepared to share for access to free mobile apps? I suspect the amount is significantly less than that which you actually agreed to share when blindly accepting the Terms of Service.”

Facebook Messenger Free?

There is no such thing as free

Here’s a word for word summarized version of the permissions you grant Facebook:

  • ·Requires the acceptance of an alarming amount of personal data and, even more startling, direct control over your mobile device.
  • Opening the full application also requires more memory, bandwidth, and battery life.
  • Allows the app to call phone numbers without your intervention. This may result in unexpected charges or calls. Malicious apps may cost you money by making calls without your confirmation.
  • Allows the app to send SMS messages. This may result in unexpected charges. Malicious apps may cost you money by sending messages without your confirmation.
  • Allows the app to record audio with microphone. This permission allows the app to record audio at any time without your confirmation.
  • Allows the app to take pictures and videos with the camera. This permission allows the app to use the camera at any time without your confirmation.
  • Allows the app to read you phone’s call log, including data about incoming and outgoing calls. This permission allows apps to save your call log data, and malicious apps may share call log data without your knowledge.
  • Allows the app to read data about your contacts stored on your phone, including the frequency with which you’ve called, emailed, or communicated in other ways with specific individuals.
  • Allows the app to read personal profile information stored on your device, such as your name and contact information. This means the app can identify you and may send your profile information to others.
  • Allows the app to access the phone features of the device. This permission allows the app to determine the phone number and device IDs, whether a call is active, and the remote number connected by a call.
  • Allows the app to get a list of accounts known by the phone. This may include any accounts created by applications you have installed.

“no app is truly free. “Free” online apps are paid for by the provision of personal data such as name, location, browsing history, etc. In turn, mobile developers and social networks charge advertisers to serve up highly targeted ads to specific groups of people.” You have been warned.

Instead install ChatSecure App that easily imports all your Facebook Friends into the app also showing you if they’re online or not just like Messenger, except they encrypt your messages. You can download the app via their page at the above link. (Free & Open Source Secure Messaging for iPhone/Android)

The History and Future of Distance Education

Standard

I’m a firm believer in education. Especially today when there are fewer jobs, and a tech skills shortage.  I consider myself to be a lifelong learner. The stats and figures and future predictions below make an information junkie like me very happy. Since education affects us all, from a student perspective, an educator, an employer, a job seeker, I thought I’d share this great infographic curated from an “innovator in lowering education costs via eLearning” – StraighterLine.com

However the available online free or fee based courses can differ widely so I wanted to include a guide for everyone to do their own research before settling on any one school for training themselves.  Here’s a link to help start your research:

Check out the very informative SlideShare from Prakash Bala below:

I believe the “meat and potatoes” of the slideshow are on slide 7 and 8.  Prakash lists very important key points you must remember to do before an interview.  I cannot stress this enough, you must absolutely, positively practice for any interview if you expect to have a chance to get the job.  There is way too much competition out there today.

See some stats from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

Among the major worker groups, unemployment rates declined in April for adult men (5.9 percent), adult women (5.7 percent), teenagers (19.1 percent), whites (5.3 percent), blacks (11.6 percent), and Hispanics (7.3 percent). The jobless rate for Asians was 5.7 percent (not seasonally adjusted), little changed over the year. (See tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.)

The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) declined by 287,000 in April to 3.5 million; these individuals accounted for 35.3 percent of the unemployed. Over the past 12 months, the number of long-term unemployed has decreased by 908,000. (See table A-12.)

So you see, it stands to reason that anyone that really wants to get that job they have their eye on, will practice, cross their fingers and hope for the best.  Because the employers short list likely totals at least 30 others maybe just as qualified as you.

So here are some of the steps that Prakash outlined in his slideshare:

  • Have a written script to read from
  • Practice in front of a mirror until you think it is perfect
  • Calculate how long it takes you to read your script
  • Ensure that you highlight all your top accomplishments in your script
  • Make it about 1 to 2 minutes long, succinct and to the point with 3 to 4 sections
  • Start with stating your contact info: name, title, location
  • Discuss your academic qualifications
  • Speak to any projects, its goals, objectives, and outcomes and your role in it
  • List your strengths, accomplishments, and what you will bring to the table
  • Conclude with your email address, phone number, and any professional website address
